Shelby first met her husband while working at a medical clinic in a local village. He overheard Shelby saying she was “looking for a women in Guatemala that knew everything about the village patterns and textiles”. Gladys is that, and so much more. She is one of the reasons Hazlo exists. She taught Shelby the ability to see a huipil and immediately recall what village it came from... ok not every single time but she is still learning. Shelby is known to go sit in her shop and say “teach me how to be you”. Gladys laughs every time, and then immediately starts teaching Shelby her ways. If there is a textile involved, Gladys hands were involved. Whether she was connecting us with a weaver or finding a one of a kind, vintage textile.
Shelby used to pass her every day walking home from the hospital and would stop to ask Maria a question or just sit down to ask her how she was doing. Shelby is that ideas girl that wakes up in the middle of a dead sleep to jot down an absurd creative thought. We are always creating, always. Probably more than we should. Maria is the one that usually helps make those thoughts come to life. She and Shelby first bonded over their love for friendship bracelets and you see the bracelets have gotten a little out of hand. Whether we are looking for a specific material or technique, Maria is our go-to!
Meet Josue and Edgar.
If leather is involved, Josue and Edgar are present. These best friends are our bag experts from start to finish. THey know everything there is to know about leather and hardware. They turn Shelby’s designs on paper into physical molds to form the bags. We would be lost without their hands.
She, along with her family, handles our belts, from start to finish. We have truly never met a more meek, joyful women. She never fails to bring our colors to life and we are eager to see our new designs come to life, but not without Theresa.
He began perfecting the recipe for his clay decades ago. It is indeed, perfect. After he makes the clay, he hand picks each piece and molds it into the leaves that make up our Espie earrings. He makes every paint color we dream of, from scratch, and handpaints each leaf.
